A fresh approach to family law

Parting without pain.

Not counselling. Not reconciliation. Just calm guidance to help you both to separate and plan your family's new future.

When you have realised that your relationship has reached the end of its course, working out how you can both move forward can seem almost impossibly difficult. On top of the emotional pain you may be experiencing, the practicalities of untangling your lives which have been woven together for so long can be very tough.

Most difficult of all, is trying to agree on anything with your ex. Arguing over the simplest of issues as well as the really important ones may feel like an insurmountable problem.

The good news is that our professional Family Mediation expert, Jon Leach, spends his entire working life helping couples from the Skipton, Dales, Ilkley and Otley area to part more easily - and he can help you too.

How does it work?

How is the mediator qualified?

Where does the mediation take place?

How long does it take?

Usually three sessions of 1 – 1 1/2 hours each is enough for compromises to be reached on all the issues you are facing and a plan established.

Why should I choose mediation?

  • Although talking to friends and relatives may feel helpful, often they may have their own opinions which can get in the way of actually helping you to make progress. By contrast, Jon is a stranger and will listen to both sides independently without any bias and help to steer you both to finding all-round solutions that will work out for everyone’s benefit.
  • The government have deemed that mediation should become central to divorce law practice. If you are looking for Legal Aid to help with your divorce, then you will be required to prove that you have explored mediation before your case can proceed to court.
  • Successful mediation is less financially expensive than going to court over a divorce settlement or arrangements for children.
  • Mediation is less stressful than going to court as it is not adversarial by its very nature.
  • Successful mediation means you can both begin your new lives knowing that you have resolved your issues constructively together, providing a stable base for your children’s future and any dealings you will have with your former partner.

Mediation is voluntary, no solutions are imposed, but because decisions have been reached by you both together, the outcomes are more effective

Mediation is confidential – everything discussed remains private, with the exception of any issue relating to child safety or financial disclose.

There is no right or wrong, and Jon will not take sides, but will help you both to compromise so that you can part without further distress.
